![]() ![]() The AC models all use the same motor, though the RPM ones are housed in a plastic case with the accompany capacitors for phase switching. Unfortunately, the economies of scale for the production of nice AC synchronous motors is not what it once was - in the 60s and 70s they were cheap as chips due to widespread use in clocks as well as turntables, but this is no longer true. They outsource motor production, as is true of nearly every turntable manufacturer these days. Pro-Ject is a company which manufactures primarily tonearms and platter bearings, and which assembles turntables using these and other components. Is that overstated due to their popularity or should I go with the Theory and feel more comfortable that their upgraded model and support system trumps the perception of "better" SQ? ![]() I've seen everyone love the sound of their projects but in the long run it seems people have problems. The better warranty and service, etcīut then I come back to thinking "I was just gonna spend $600 on the Evo and now I'm considering $1000.are my concerns about the quality problems on the Pro-Ject valid?" And that's where I'm at. Sure the motor isn't "isolated" but it's quieter than the Pro-Jects' ones. On paper it looks terrific and early reviews have praised its sound quality. So I've come back full circle (no pun intended) to U-Turn and their new Theory. I thought maybe if I'm already spending this much then maybe going to the next tier up, the X1, as its on sale for $999 made sense, but then I started seeing the same issues mentioned with that design. Then I started noticed recurring issues in many posts-even people that were happy with their Pro-Jects commenting on slight motor hums and bad hinges and power supply issues. (I also would prefer a belt drive to a direct drive) The potential upgrades from sub-platter to Sumiko styluses are really appealing and it seems these are more highly regarded than the U-Turn without getting into Rega 3 price territory. He's had it for 7 years and, he said, even after warranty they've been super responsive and helpful when he's had problems and would totally buy them again.Īs my research went deeper I started thinking maybe the Pro-Ject Evo would be better. At first my friend directed me to U-Turn for the orbit as he has one and loves it. I've been doing my research on a new turntable after getting rid of an old cheapie.
